Oral Appliances For Snoring and Sleep Apnea
|
The use of an oral appliance may be convenient and effective treatment for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring is caused by the tongue and the tissues in the back of your mouth partially occluding your throat while sleeping. When severe snoring is present, obstructive sleep apnea may occur whereby the throat is blocked enough to cause oxygen to decrease and a partial awakening to occur. The flow of sleep is disrupted resulting in fatigue and sleepiness during the day.

Treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea
Patients with severe sleep apnea may partially or completely stop breathing from 40 to 80 or more times an hour. Often these individuals are treated with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Mask (CPAP). The CPAP mask usually stops sleep apnea while it is worn by the patient, but some apnea sufferers are unable or unwilling to wear this kind of medical device over the nose and head. Patients with heavy snoring and mild sleep apnea may benefit from the nightly use of an oral appliance which acts to bring the jaw and tongue forward and open the posterior airway and throat.

Is an oral appliance right for you?
While an oral appliance does not cure snoring and sleep apnea, when used properly you will feel better during waking hours and snore less at night. The appliance acts to reposition your jaws, making the tongue less likely to fall back and block the throat. Many patients find that the device is more comfortable and easier to wear than a CPAP mask. An intraoral appliance is also less cumbersome than CPAP and may allow the avoidance of throat and jaw surgery. Making the appliance involves two appointments that are quick and simple.
